2009: J4K on TV in Brazil for the 2nd time

Sim Meu Amigaos! Basileiros love Just For Kicks, … and we love them too! Following a first series of wildly successful air dates with our friends at GloboSat, they asked to renew the licensing of J4K for yet another term. The film will be shown on their encrypted channel, the Multishow (http://multishow.globo.com/).

Who said films and especially documentaries have a short life span? Well that rule does not apply to our baby. Five years and kickin’! Like Exec Producer Thierry Daher says: “Kicks is like a good wine, it matures and its relevance increases with age. By producing a film that was labeled upon its release as an instant classic, I believe we documented a piece of history; one that everyone can relay to.”

And that is especially true in a country where the shoe of choice is “the other rubber sole” … the Havaiana flip flop; and where sneakers are still considered a luxury (think that a pair of Nike cost north of $200 on average, in a country where the minimum monthly salary is $180 – yo Phil Knight, what the hell you’re doing?).

2009: J4K on ARTE TV, in France & Germany

A pop culture documentary about sneakers and hip-hop on France/German distinguished top cultural channel? For real? Yes sir! Grand Master Caz & JDL, along with Fab5 Fredy and Bonz Malone, our official street cat, made it to the forefront of European culture and television! So is Arte going underground or is sneaker culture popping up to the point it is now mainstream?

Probably a bit of both if you ask us. When it was originally broadcasted in France on Canal Plus (the European equivalent of HBO in the US) J4K became and remained the top documentary audience for over two years. It raised eyebrows in France’s conservative cultural circles, yet made sneaker culture available to all. Today, we’re talking about a serious move for ARTE, to recognize what was once a jewel of street-culture-only, as a piece of legitimate culture.

J4K was first shown on ARTE late 2009 and has now found a home there for the next few years. Check out ARTE’s programming on www.arte.tv for upcoming show dates/times.
