On Sat Sept 8th 2007, JUST FOR KICKS comes home to Fort Greene, Brooklyn
On Saturday September 8th, JUST FOR KICKS will be one of two films screening at the first Fort Greene Music, Film and Food Festival in Fort Greene Park, Brooklyn. The Festival will also welcome a host of famous artists such as Talib Kweli, Lizz Fields and Rosie Perez who will present her latest film, YO SOY BORICUA, as well as lesser-known musicians and artists form all over the world, now living in Fort Greene.
Four years ago, Producers Thierry Daher and Patrick Cariou, both living in the Fort Greene neighborhood in Brooklyn, started to kick around the idea about a new documentary that would feature the history of sneakers and the driving influence of hip-hop behind it...
The Festival will start at noon and will last until 10:00PM. Both films will start screening at sunset.
Partnering with Come Chantrel in LA, they shot a few interviews, edited a 3 minutes trailer and went on to independently produce and distribute globally the first film about the sneaker culture. Four years later, JUST FOR KICKS has been featured on 5 continents, played in over 30 international festivals and has been seen by more than 100 million people worldwide.
Having travelled around the world and triumphed many awards, the film will for the first time be featured in Brooklyn, in the very home that saw its birth.
The Fort Greene/Clinton Hill areas are neighborhoods which have shared much growth and change over the last years. Today they are one of Brooklyn ’s most sought after enclaves to participate in a lifestyle which has been developed by a large home-grown artistic community. Much of the talent that Brooklyn is famous for has evolved from these two neighborhoods, including stars like Common, Mos Def, Erykah Badu, author Colin Channer, poet Saul Williams, actors Rosie Perez, Roger Guenver Smith and most famously Spike Lee.
The purpose of the festival is not only to entertain but to help stimulate economic development and community awareness. As real estate values soar and plans to develop the Atlantic Yards forge ahead, Fort Greene/Clinton Hill remain as areas with mixed incomes, ethnicities as well as one being cited as having the lowest rates of health insurance in Brooklyn.
“The Festival is about building bridges in the community. We are a wonderful mixed bag of folks. That’s the beauty of our neighborhood. There are people and businesses who require our support, and the FortGreeneFest is an avenue towards providing some of that support.
